The first car washing mitt was invented by S.M. Arnold at the turn of the 20th century

DID YOU KNOW?

“The company lore, as passed down by our father to us, is that in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s red tide was severely damaging the sponge beds. You didn’t really have the synthetic materials that are available today, so it had a big impact. Our grandfather, Sandy Arnold, came up with the idea of taking shearling and sewing it into a wash mitt, developing the first wash mitt for cleaning. We still make wash mitts!”

Sandy Arnold, with the support of his father, L.T. Arnold, and his brother-in-law, Gene Austin, started his business by selling chamois and sponges.
Gene Austin was one of the the first “crooners” and his recording in 1928 of “My Blue Heaven” was the largest selling record of the era.
