South Windsor-based ClearSpan, which makes fabric and metal buildings and structures for a variety of industries, has transitioned its manufacturing operation to produce temporary disaster structures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
ClearSpan, a division of South Windsor’s Engineering Services & Products Co. (ESAPCO), said it’s shipping temporary medical facilities to governments and medical centers in less than 24 hours of an order being placed.
The ClearSpan structures, officials say, are ideal for medical use, drive through COVID-19 testing and temporary emergency housing, among other uses.
The company said it’s manufacturing numerous foundation options for first responders, although two of its structures — the helical anchoring system and epoxy anchoring system — are ideal for disaster and pandemic response uses because they can be either drilled directly into the ground or into an existing foundation or concrete pads.
ClearSpan is also providing installation services or a project manager to oversee construction. Both options allow ClearSpan buildings to be erected within a matter of days.
“Both foundations can be permanent or temporary, and they are an environmentally friendly option that won’t disturb the surrounding environment after they are removed,” officials said in a statement.
ClearSpan is responding to the coronavirus crisis as mobile hospitals in Hartford, New Haven and Danbury were being readied this week for an expected influx of coronavirus patients in the coming days.
On Tuesday, a 250-bed facility was being constructed inside Southern Connecticut State University’s Moore Fieldhouse. The mobile hospital is part of the Federal Emergency Management Administration’s response to the pandemic and is expected to house non-critical COVID-19 patients.

State mobile hospital units with 25 beds each have been constructed at Danbury Hospital and at Hartford’s St. Francis Hospital. A third 25-bed facility is being set up at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown.
Officials at Stamford Hospital, which is dealing with large numbers of coronavirus cases, are also looking to use the healthcare system’s once-mothballed Tully Center in Stamford to house recovering or non-acute virus patients from both Stamford and Greenwich Hospitals.
